Mission

This major meets state requirements for Earth Science, Physical Science, and/ or Integrated Science Teaching Endorsements. It provides students with the knowledge and skills to teach Earth Science, Physical Science and/or Integrated Science. It provides students with the knowledge and skills to build upon the curricula described by the Utah State Office of Education for the above programs. It provides students with knowledge of math, chemistry, physics, and biology required to understand the earth sciences.

Secondary Education

The purpose of Secondary Teacher Licensure Program is to prepare junior high, middle school, and high school educators. Competent secondary teaching requires both in-depth knowledge of subject matter and skill in applying educational concepts and principles. Candidates for teacher licensure in secondary education take the required courses in a subject area (i.e., composite teaching major, teaching major) and licensure courses through the College of Education to acquire pedagogical skills, and knowledge of students, families and urban communities.

Degree Requirements

In order to graduate with the Earth Sciene Composite Teaching major (ESCTM) bachelor’s degree, students complete in the ESTCM major which include Bachelor’s Degree requirements, in addition to the Secondary Teacher Licensure program requirements. To be recommended for licensure students must complete the licensure year courses (5th year) in the College of Education.

Licensure

Teaching licenses are granted by the Utah State Office of Education. The College of Education recommends candidates for the Utah Level I Teaching License grades 6-12, upon successful completion of the program and exit exams. The sixth through twelfth grade license requires a teaching major or composite major.

ESL Endorsement: Beginning Fall 2010, all classes currently required by the Utah State Office of Education for an ESL endorsement will be included in this licensure program. This means that every student completing this program will be eligible for an ESL endorsement.

Advising

Students must maintain contact with multiple advisors during the course of their studies. Each advisor has specialized knowledge and information. The advisors in the College of Earth Science and Engineering are listed here: ESCTM Advisors. The Advisor in the College of Education (Urban Institute for Teacher Education) is:
