PACKING CHECKLIST

Travel Gear Pack light; space is very limited. You may not be able to do laundry on the trip. Bring soft, squishable luggage; only duffle bags are permitted. For those participants going to the meeting in Lima after the field course, you may leave luggage at the Westin (bags and hard luggage that have good clothing for the meeting). Excess baggage may have to be left at our departure point hotel (Hotel Maximo in Tacna to which we will not ever return). Leave room to bring back rocks.

Required:

  • STEEL TOE BOOTS are REQUIRED at all mines and prospects (Steel toe sneakers or shoes will not cut it).
  • Health form (for access to mines)
  • Long sleeve shirts and pants: professional mine wear is required in all mines
  • Hard hat: you must bring a hard hat for your use
  • Bright yellow, orange or red reflective vest
  • Personal items, including prescription medications, contact information and insurance card
  • Safety glasses (clear) / sunglasses
  • Gloves

Recommended:

  • Alternative photo identification (for access to mines)
  • Wind breaker or light jacket
  • Sunscreen
  • Towel
  • Alarm clock
  • Hat / cap

Other

  • Passport, (make extra copies of first page of passport with your photo)
  • Immunizations: consider Hepatitis A and hepatitis B; tetanus must be up to date
  • Field gear (handlens, field notebook, marker pens, pen, pencil, pencil magnet, hammer, sample bags)
  • Cash & credit cards: Cash for tourist items and meals. We will be in small towns for the most part. ATM's may NOT be common. MC, Visa accepted everywhere else. Exchange money at the Lima airport.
  • Water and food issues: water is safe (wash hands, brush teeth, wash fruit)
  • Field trip reading material
  • Peru tour guidebook (optional- can be very helpful)
  • Business cards
  • Cameras: We are commonly required to register cameras and computers (makes, models, serial numbers) before entering the mines; please be prepared to have this information handy as it may save us considerable time in checking in at the gate.
